The Super Bowl isn’t just a sporting event. Those who don’t follow football, like myself, even tune in as it’s an opportunity for the advertising world to showcase their best work, and integrate themselves into the trends and culture that have been circulating the past year. In the digital age, the campaign elements of Super Bowl commercials extend far beyond their brief airtime. In this post, we’ll delve into how these commercials have transformed into multi-media campaigns, leveraging various platforms to create a lasting brand experience.
Brands nowadays release teasers, build buzz online, and offer extended cuts of their Super Bowl commercials to build anticipation, and make those who follow the brand feel as though they “get” the inside joke of the commercial.
A perfect example of this was the Cerave Super Bowl commercial. Rumors online about Michael Cera sparked that he was the inventor of the brand, because of the similar last name, or that he was becoming a skin care influencer. These snippets offer a taste of what’s to come and serve as a prelude to the main event. Social media platforms have become communities for brands to tease audiences with snippets and behind-the-scenes content, creating a buzz that extends far beyond the TV screen.
Cerave strategically employed social media platforms to engage audiences before, during, and after the big game. Twitter campaigns, Instagram takeovers, and interactive TikTok posts create a multi-dimensional experience, fostering a sense of community engagement. The 30-second commercial spot has transformed into an opportunity for brands to create a multi-media campaign that allows for a deeper connection and presence with their audience. Cerave went so far as to involve itself in current pop culture trends by having Bobbi Althoff, host of the really good podcast, interview Michael Cera and post it to their website takeover.
